July 14th, A Day to Remember

Baruch in his cast. Haven't had time to post the whole story behind the cast. Here goes. . .
Sunday afternoon we headed out on our bikes to take the NW Arterial hill challenge up to the Arboretum where there is "music in the park" on Sunday nights.  We were getting a bit of a late start and the whole trip felt slightly off.  We often start with prayer, not tonight. Anyway, Baruch and I were well ahead of everyone, but not yet to the big hill when we stopped because I got a text from Drew.  I read Baruch the text "go ahead up the hill, we will catch up." So we started off. Baruch standing to get his speed up. His speed increased quickly when suddenly his bike went out of control, he sped off the path and into the ditch. Screams of "It's broken" and "just pull it back into place" met me as I threw my bike aside and raced to him. After looking at his arm and seeing the bone, still beneith the skin, but definately not where it should be my instinct was to dial 911, then I thought, no call Drew, but I found myself talking to the 911 operator instead. The sherrif arrived and I hung up with the operator who said she would be sending an ambulance. Some time between the fall and the sheriff's arrival Mary and Abi rode up and I sent them to get Dad as quickly as possible. Baruch thought his arm would feel better if he had something hard under it so I fished around in his backpack and grabbed his notebook. We put it underneath and that alleviated some pain (not much though). By the time Drew arrived I told the sheriff I didn't think we would need the ambulance. He said once they have been called they come and follow through on the call.   Drew took off to get our van, which was thankfully parked at the bottom of the bluff. He showed up shortly after the ambulance. While the EMT's looked over the arm, and said they would not be held responsible for any further damage should we refuse the ambulance ride, Drew got all the kids engaged in bringing all the bikes and helmets to the van and efficiently loaded them on the tailor. We signed a waiver, taking full responsibility for our actions and somehow, (I honestly don't remember if we carried Baruch or he walked) got Baruch to the van. It wasn't until I thawacked my head getting into the van that I realized I still had my helmet on. Good thing too ; ). Drew drove skillfully to the ER while I called ahead so they would be expecting us. From there is was: See the Dr. on duty.  Start an IV and give morphine for pain. Take x-rays. See the orthopedic Dr. on call. See the anesthesialogist. Prep for surgery. Go into surgery. Have succussful surgery, ending with a cast put on. Go into recovery. Then take forever to be brought from recovery to the Pediatric Unit.* Spend night under the watchful eye of a diligent nurse. Come home. . .

The surgery. . . He underwent closed surgery which means they manipulated the bones without making an incision. I guess it is still surgery because they put him under and he was in the surgery room.  Hey and then we get charged a full surgery bill + the anesthesia bill. Surgery involved putting the ulna, which looked sort of crumbled in the x-ray to me, about 1 inch long just below the elbow, back in place. It also involved reducing his radius which suffered a monteggia fracture (meaning basically it came out of the socket). Reducing means putting it back in place.

All I know is I am extremely thankful to the Lord for competent medical care and a husband who drives better than an ambulance any day of the week!

Oh, and yes, his cast is really that big!

As Mom used to always say, "There you have it!"

I sure miss that Momma!!

Mom`s Last Days on this Earth

Mom had not been doing well since a few days before Christmas when she went into the hospital with flu like symptoms. My brother Matt and his family had suffered from a nasty flu so that is what Matt assumed she had when he brought her in.  She was diagnosed at that time with COPD or emphysema.

She only stayed in the hospital one night and was sent back to her apartment at the assisted living facility. My brother Matt was not well enough to check on her.  My sister Terry called and asked that the staff check on her more frequently, wondering if we could pay for a higher level of care for her to be better looked after.

Fast forward several days.  It is now December 30th or 31st. Matt and his wife still have severe flu/cold symptoms. Matt's wife, Michelle called our cousin to see if he would check on mom. He found mom lying at the foot of her bed in a fetal position. I am not sure if Frank then helped her up or if she couldn't move at all but I know when Matt came the next day she was in severe pain and unable to move. Matt called the ambulance (as he couldn't get her to move) and they took her to the emergency room.

What happened from there is a huge blur in my mind. It seemed like forever until the test results came back showing that the bone surrounding the hardware in mom's hip had disintegrated.  Not long after that she was diagnosed with a blood infection that was later found to be caused from the hardware and causing the bone disintegration.  Surgery was scheduled and canceled several times, until finally on January 10 the metal hardware was removed and a concrete, antibiotic soaked spacer was put in it's place.

My sister Renee arrived January 1st or 2nd and was by mom's side reading scripture with her, singing to her and praying with her during the long days of much pain and waiting until surgery. Renee said her last goodbyes to mom on Friday January 11th and headed to pick up my sister Terry from the airport.  Terry flew in at Tampa and together they drove to Orlando, stayed in a hotel so Terry could drop Renee off for her flight in the early AM on the 12th.

Terry went straight to the hospital where she found mom droopy on one side, the victim of a stroke. Mom's speech was slurry, her left side useless.  Sunday mom called out for Drew several times before Terry realized she meant my Drew.  Mom wanted Drew to pray with her, which he did. That was the last day mom could communicate with us in words. I cannot express how thankful I am that Drew noticed his phone vibrate and answered it! I type with tears rolling down my face in thanksgiving for God's mercy, remembering the tears I cried at church that morning, excusing myself from my seat to cry in the bathroom and stock up on tissues.  I hesitated to return and pausing in the hall remember the hug of a sister in Christ and fresh tears all over again. How the Lord uses a body of believers to comfort in so many ways.

The stroke left mom unable to swallow and late Thursday, January 17th she was moved a very nice hospice house. Rita, her husband Tim and I all arrived Thursday PM. Dawn arrived Thursday or Friday, I can't remember. I will never forget walking into the room at the hospice house and seeing mom laying there.  All I could think was how beautiful she looked.  Not some super model - outward, who cares beauty, but the beauty of a woman with strong character. The beauty of a woman who had raised 7 children who had all risen up and called her blessed. The beauty of a mom who took the time to lay down on the floor and color a picture with me when I was a little girl. The beauty of swinging with her on our front porch swing in Michigan. The beauty of someone who never complained or spoke poorly of anyone. The beauty of a woman who met a struggling couple, owners of a Christian book store and let them live with us a for several months (when money was tight on our part). The beauty of a mother who told me it was wrong to boss my husband around.  The beauty of a woman who opened our house up every holiday and many Sunday afternoons to widows, or widowers. This beautiful mom laying there on that bed! Oh and she looked so, so amazingly beautiful.

She labored over every breath as she lay there. Her eyes opened and she recognized us as we cried over her, hugged her, spoke to her, sang to her and said our goodbyes.  I stayed with her that night, thinking it could be her last.  By 2:30 AM her breathing evened out as she seemed to fall into a sleep and we both slept for a time. The next several days she was surrounded by her children coming and going. Mark came several times. Aunt Maxine, Frank, Uncle Bill all came and went. We sat and shared memories, sang songs, held her hand, washed her head with wet clothes and then early in the morning on January 21st she moaned and breathed her last, with Dawn and Rita in the room.

Her struggle over.

Her, full of beauty.

Snapshot Summary #33

Friday 18 - March, 2011 My Uncle's funeral was this morning. I seriously considered trying to juggle things so I could attend. But in the end I did not make it. His death hit me really hard, actually it hit me before he died. He is my mom's baby brother and when he got sick I longed to see my mom. Funny how emotions get all intertwined. I totally denied the fact that he wasn't going to get better. He rallied so many time in the past I counted on him rallying again. When I came to terms with the fact that he wasn't going to get better this time I had a day of serious blues. I simply went back to bed and buried my sobs under the covers. I finally concluded my hope is not in this world. Burying my head won't change a thing. My hope is in The Living God. I continue to draw strength and encouragement from Nahum 1:7 "The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble and He knows those who take refuge in Him." I did not get over that blue, depressed feeling by pulling myself up by my bootstraps. I got over it by placing myself under a God who is good, though I don't understand His ways. He IS good. By calling out on the name of the Lord "Be my refuge" I had a good day. This is a birthday to remember. A day to grieve and yet rejoice. Grieve a loss, rejoice in The Truth. Baruch

Our science partners came over in the morning and we reviewed our lesson on the senses. Then we did a hands on experiment with tasting three different foods, first with the nose plugged and eyes closed (blindfolded)and then without the nose plugged, but still blindfolded. We recorded weather each participant could identify each food tasted while plugging the nose and closing the eyes, and then again without the nose plugged, but still blindfolded. Based on the fact that several of the children could not identify some of the foods with there nose plugged, but all could identify them without the nose plugged, we determined that our sense of smell enhances our ability to taste.

Mary and Sophia (having a friend named the same thing as her cousin has totally confused Chloe in the past but today she seems to differentiate between "cousint Sophia" and "friend Sophia" as she started calling them).

After science time we packed up to head to Pa and Grandma's house where we dropped Baruch, Abram and Chloe off and went to see Anna as Mrs. Berry in the play Anne of Green Gables. The play was very well done. Well cast. The children memorized an incredible amount of lines and did a fantastic job!

Saturday 19 - March, 2011

My birthday didn't stop . . . Pa and Grandma watched the children so Drew and I could have a fantastically extended date, which included breakfast, shopping, shopping and more shopping and then lunch to boot! Thanks Pa and Grandma. Chloe enjoying some Grandma love

Pa and Grandma's gift to me (they brought to our house several weeks early!)

Sunday 20 - March, 2011

Four days ago Drew announced to the children and I - we will be attending Christ Church of Dubuque! Drew feels great relief, having made a decision. Searching for a church has the potential of placing a family in a dangerous position. I am so thankful for Drew's wisdom in our search as I know the elders at Potosi knew where we stood and were ready to welcome us back into fellowship if we came up dry. Drew's forethought benefited the entire family. After participating in church this AM Drew headed into the office to plug away on some things he needed to get to. The children and I unpacked, did laundry, and had a low key day. Monday

21 - March, 2011 We had a lovely morning preparing for Aunt Terry's visit and preparing soup for ourselves and a family from church who has been sick. I made bread. Mary and I chopped carrots and potatoes, Cob made cookies. Lots of practical homeschooling going on today :-). Aunt Terry arrived just in time to watch three of the children while three went with me to drop off the meal. After super we enjoyed opening God's word together and also reading from "The God Who is There" by D.A. Carson. Tuesday 22 - March 2011 The children were very eager for Aunt Terry to wake up. We had oatmeal for breakfast. After morning chores and a huge checklist we got out the wii for some exercise. It was chilly and rainy all day and nobody went outside much so we all needed some wiggle release, even Aunt Terry :-). We worked up an appetite so got out the trail mix Aunt Terry had brought along . . . ahhhh now we are revived! After snacks we folded papers. After super Aunt Terry helped the girl's team deliver papers. Then the boys headed to table tennis club while the girls headed to Wal Mart to fabric shop. We ended up going to Jo Ann Fabrics as well. Wal Mart did not have just what Mary had in mind. Abi and Mary wanted to make princess dresses for a party they were invited to on Saturday. The party was supposed to be a dress up party and they were so excited ALL week long - even longer I think!

Wednesday 23 - March, 2011 We are going through "The Names of God" by Kay Arthur at Wednesday night bible study and I have been really convicted about living in the flesh instead of putting my flesh to death. Gal. 5:16- , especially v. 19 - outbursts of anger - oh man I need to put that to death. So after sharing some of what I have been learning with the children we headed out for a nature hike and a nature reserve south of town! It was a little wet, slightly chilly, and extremely muddy! No wonder the children's coughs worsened:(

Chloe and Aunt Terry We had a snack of apples, carrots, cheese and almonds when we got back to the nature center. The gang (Jacob, Abram, Baruch, Abigail, Chloe and Mary Evidence of the extreme mud!! (Abi's socks) The nature center had a cool song bird exhibit with a hugantic stuffed birds nest. The kids had a blast playing in it. Mary, Chloe, Baruch, Abigail and Abram Thursday 24 - March, 2011 Abi made omelette's for breakfast this morning. When I told her I wished I could take a shower this AM she offered to make breakfast so I could! I was thankful (if she looks sad it is #1 because she didn't like me taking her picture while she was wearing pajamas and #2 because she was already anticipating saying goodbye to Aunt Terry) I took a few more pictures of our morning. One of Mary working on her princess dress. It was hot on her mind when she woke up this AM. One of Mary in her dress which she finished at about 11:00 AM. One of Jacob and Aunt Terry - goodbyes to Aunt Terry. They are gone :( Can't find them anywhere. A very mysterious disappearance I must say. Later the boys dressed up like the man in black (Princess Bride). If you have not read the Princess Bride by William Goldman you really should. It makes a great family read aloud. I did have to edit out quite a bit of the introduction but the humor in the introduction is so good I couldn't just skip the whole thing. Abram and Baruch - best of friends After Aunt Terry left I started working on the dress I cut out for Abigail. She wanted to help me sew but it was a bit too technical for that. I was surprised I got it finished as quickly as I did. I was really thanking the Lord it came together without enormous amounts of ripping seams out :) Even the zipper went in rather well. Friday 25 - March, 2011 We Miss you AUNT TRERRY!! Abi and I worked on a Birthday gift for the party tomorrow. I cut. Abi sewed. Abi made some nice straight seams on Gwen's cloak. We made three cloaks in all since there was a big chunk of fabric left when I was done cutting out Gwen's. We figured the littlest two of Gwen's sisters would enjoy having cloaks as well. Jacob worked on this origami dragon for several hours. His turned out fantastic. He worked on origami so hard and long Baruch said "You've kind of dedicated your life to origami Jacob," which got a roaring laughter from all who heard him. Saturday 26 - March, 2011 What a blessing to be at a party where all the girls got along so well. Happy Birthday Gwen!! Watching Gwen open her gifts was THE biggest blessing of all. She pondered over each one with so much thankful it delighted everyone in the room! Abi enjoying the party Mary after we got home from the party. The girls had such a fantastic time. Chloe keeps asking if we can go back and play house some more.

Memories of Aunt Donna

A man once said, "There are two things that last forever, people and the Word of God so invest your time in those two things."  Aunt Donna invested in many people! I am blessed to have been one of them.

By the time I was born Aunt Donna had 7 children and her baby was already 7 years old.  She and Uncle Bill had such a special relationship.  I always admired how "in love" they were.  They enjoyed being around each other tremendously. Uncle Bill and Aunt Donna were my Mom and Dad's best friends.  There were not many years when our families didn't live within a few miles of each other.

When living in Jackson I remember Aunt Donna working in their office on Oakridge.  Papers were strewn everywhere and I am sure she had a zillion things to do between daily household care for a family of 9, not to mention, managing apartments and doing the books for their dry cleaning business but she always had time to talk to me.  I remember Mom and Aunt Donna planning picnic lunches or camping trips.  Hearing Mom, on the phone, say "o.kay Donna, you bring the mustard and I'll bring the mayo."  Parties in the back yard on Oakridge, cribbage at the dinning room table, Marty asking for a crimpkin from Ron Maccies and Aunt Donna always giving him a few dollars for our treat, camping at Elk lake, Chrissy sitting on the coach nursing Aaron, hiding behind Aunt Donna when Ed and Gerry came in with their big beards, running into the dinning room table and Aunt Donna scurrying to get ice, then holding me afterwards, School Section Lake, boat trips to Caladesi Island, The hot tub at the Kentuckian, Making beds and cleaning rooms with her at the Kentuckian, sitting in the breezeway (o.k. the adults sat, I ran around in circles and Aunt Donna let me :-)), Aunt Donna's endless energy to serve everyone food and drinks, camping at Fort Desoto, walking on the beach, Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrtions, walks to the park near their house on Suemar Rd all flood my mind.  One of my favorite memories of Aunt Donna comes after we moved (following U. Bill and A. Donna once again) to Dunedin FL.  Matt and Renee were supposed to be watching me.  I got tired of Matt's endless teasing, so I loaded up the wagon with stuffed animals, and with our dog Sorry at my heals, headed off to a safe haven, Aunt Donna's house!  By the time I had walked the mile there Matt had called Aunt Donna and she was expecting me.  She greeted me with a warm hug, then sat me down to cookies and milk.  I wasn't quite finished with that when she came out of her room with a brand new doll for me!  After a visit she drove me back home.

It's no wonder I (and everyone) will always remember her as Aunt Donna Mae Goodheart!
